This is a basic guide to the major coverages for your Florida car policy. This outline is to help you easily understand the coverages your policy provides. It also highlights information on deductibles, surcharges, and discounts.

Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability Insurance – pays damages for bodily injury, sickness, death, and damage to or destruction of property that you or another insured person is legally obligated to pay. Your policy also protects an insured person from claims for accidents arising out the ownership, maintenance, use, loading or unloading of an insured car.

Medical Payments – will make payments to or on behalf of an insured person for reasonable medical and rehabilitation expenses incurred because of bodily injury, sickness, disease, or death caused by a car accident. This coverage pays for ambulance, medical surgical, X-ray, dental, orthopedic and prosthetic devices, professional nursing services, pharmaceuticals, eyeglasses, and hearing aids.

Personal Injury Protection – pays for medical expenses, income loss, loss of services, and funeral expenses for bodily injury, sickness, disease, or death if it is the result of an accident arising from the ownership, maintenance, or use of a motor vehicle as described in the definition of motor vehicle found in your policy.

Deductibles: Deductibles may apply under Personal Injury Protection. Please check your policy for specific information on any deductible which may apply to Coverage P.

Uninsured Motorists Insurance – pays damages for bodily injury, sickness, disease, or death which an insured person is legally entitled to recover from the owner or operator of an uninsured auto. It does not pay any punitive or exemplary damages under this coverage.

Collision Insurance – pays for loss to your car or a non-owned car which results from a collision with another object, or by an upset of the car. Coverage G also extends to rental cars, less your deductible. This coverage will apply on an excess basis over the rental company’s coverage.

Comprehensive Insurance – pays for loss to your car or a rental car which does not result from a collision. Some of the hazards covered are glass breakage, missiles, falling objects, fire, theft or larceny, explosion, earthquake, windstorm, hail, water, flood, malicious mischief or vandalism, riot, civil commotion, and a collision with a bird or animal. A deductible will apply.

There are several other optional coverages you may purchase, including those which provide coverage for towing and labor costs, rental reimbursement, or non-factory install equipment. Please read your policy for a full description of these coverages.
